I think I've mentioned before that when it comes to things I tend to binge or not do them at all. When it comes to reading, I get myself into stages where I will read lots of books across a few months, and then I don't read again for another few months. It's a habit I'm trying to break. I hope to set myself a book a month challenge once I get acquainted with my new work-life balance when uni starts again in two weeks.
Though today I thought I would share with you some of my favourite books that I like to re-read whenever I can't bring myself to start a new one, or when I just want a sense of familiarity and something I know I can relate too.
The Hunger Games: I started reading The Hunger Games in my first year of university and I finished the first book in the three book series in about two days (see what I mean about binging). It took me a little longer to start and finish the second one, partly because I kept putting it off, but I really enjoyed it when I finished it. Granted, I certainly can't relate to ever being trapped in an annual gaming circuit where I have to fight for my life, but these books were incredibly well written and action packed. I really didn't like the third one at all though.
Bossypants: I have so much respect for Tina Fey, so when her autobiography came out I jumped at the chance to buy it. It's written exactly like I expected it to be, in typical Tina Fey fashion, and I don't think I need to justify it by saying anything else. That alone, should be enough.
Invisible Monsters: This is the first book by Chuck Palahniuk that I've ever read, and it took me two attempts to read it. He has such an odd writing style. It's very twisty and turny (I believe that's an exact expression, ha), and I had to go back through the book a bunch of times because I'd read over something and didn't realise how important it was to the plot. I almost gave up reading it, and it was a genuine struggle to get past the first couple of chapters, but after that I was hooked and grew to love his story telling ways. I recommend it, but only if you have enough time to dedicate yourself to it.
Paper Towns: This is one of my favourite books by John Green, in fact I'm going to go as far as saying he is one of my favourite writers. I always get caught up in his stories and before I know it the books over, and that's exactly what happened with Paper Towns; a story about two teenagers who seek revenge on people who have hurt their feelings. (It sounds better than that, I promise).
The Perks of Being a Wallflower: The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky was one of the first books to make me cry. It is beautifully written and I couldn't put it down. It has become one of the most quotable books, even more so now that it's a movie, but I stand by it being one of the books every one should read in their lives just once.
Is It Just Me?: If you're looking for a book that you'll struggle to finish because you can't stop laughing, this is it. Is It Just Me? by Miranda Hart is by far the funniest book I've ever read, with her retelling of personal (and usually embarrassing tales), it's heartwarming and honest, and I think that's why I like it so much. She's is an acquired taste, and tends to be someone you either love or hate - I've seen no one who puts themselves in the middle, but I am for one a big fan and this book can put a smile on my face in seconds.
The Silver Linings Playbook: I still haven't seen the movie, but the book my Matthew Quick is fabulous. A large portion of the book is centred around the main character Pat, who is trying to improve himself to impress his wife. The only problem is Pat has been in a neurology hospital for years, while he believes its only been a matter of months. I found it really easy to get into his mindset and I finished this book in a matter of days too.

ReplyDeleteAnd I really need to read The Hunger Games books!
I saw the Silver Linings Playbook movie and now I really want to read the book! I actually tend to not re-read books, but the only ones I do re-read are the Harry Potter books and Jane Austen's books.

I'm like you, I tend to binge read and then go a while without reading. I didn't read the Hunger Games books until a couple of months ago, I really enjoyed them and read all 3 in 4 days.
ReplyDeleteI haven't read the Silver Linings Playbook, I enjoyed the film though so will probably read the book at some point.
I tend not to re read books, that being said I think I will probably read Catching Fire again though before I see the film.
Love The Hunger Games. I also enjoyed the book The Silver Linings Playbook - I do recommend the movie too. It was absolutely tremendous.
ReplyDeleteI go through stages of not reading too, but currently been on a reading binge. I loved bossypants, and also Mindy Kaling's book is everyone hanging out without me. I got the audiobooks and they are read by the authors themselves, I think it makes them even funnier!
