I have no problem admitting that I have a little obsession with the sky. I've always thought it was one of the most beautiful and fascinating landscapes, and my camera roll is usually full of photos of the sunset, the shapes the clouds make, and the odd rainbow here and there. My obsession also stems to the stars, and occasionally space too. Despite appreciating everything the sky has to offer, I'm generally quite clueless when it comes to any knowledge behind the events that take place, and that is something I hope to change.
Two years ago when I was visiting the Lake District, the Perseids Meteor Shower took place. With my headphones in, a big comfy jumper on and a prime spot at the window I managed to see my first shooting star, and marvel at the shower itself before the clouds ruined my fun. It was one of the most beautiful things I'd ever witnessed, and what I later learned is that the Perseids Meteor Shower happens every year.
The Perseids Meteor Shower is active this year between July 17th and August 24th, but it peaks on the the morning of August 13th, which means tonight / early tomorrow morning is the best night to catch it (providing you have clear skies and are away from sources of light). I actually wasn't sure when it was due to peak, so I stayed up until 3:30am this morning and managed to catch three shooting stars among snippets of the shower. It's safe to say I'll be stopping up again tonight to see if I can catch the thing in full!
You can learn more about when to catch it by visiting Space Weather - do you think you'll stay up to catch the shower?

WOW! Absolutely gorgeous!! I live too close to NYC, so I doubt I'll be able to see anything. I can barely see any stars to begin with sadly.
ReplyDeleteI hope you get wonderful pictures!

Sincerely, Sara
Ah! I'm right there with you! I've always been obsessed with the sky -- actually I have rolls of film of the sun rising/setting and my instagram is also a reflection of that. It's just so captivating and limitless. Strangely magical despite being so ordinary.
ReplyDeleteMe too!! I'm crazy over the sky too!
ReplyDeleteYes the sky is pretty awesome! :) I've only seen a shooting star one time.
