If you have followed my blog for any amount of time, I'm sure you will have gathered that I am not a photographer. Most of my photos as of late are taken with my iPhone 5, but I know you can tell when they're taken with my DSLR. That being said, photography is something that I have always been interested in but I've always been conscious of how to pursue it in the right way. I am really interested in social and lifestyle photography, but being a music lover to the bone, there's something about capturing live shows that just hits me right in the gut.
Having had my own publication for the past two years, and constantly applying for passes for other people, I finally decided that I was just going to go for it. With no portfolio, no hint of what I really needed to do, and no clue what I was in for, I applied for my first photo pass at a local venue in my town. Approximately half an hour after I applied, I got my confirmation through and I knew I had done the right thing. I always preach about how I think people need to try new things, so I took my own advice. A few hours before the show I was really nervous, and that's when I realised I actually cared about this. It wasn't just me trying something new, it could be the start of something. And I kind of hope it is.
My main aim from the show was to get some shots in focus, and I achieved that despite the notoriously bad red lighting. I really enjoyed myself too, and put myself out of my comfort zone. I've been waiting years to throw myself into the deep end, so I'm proud of myself for going for it. I plan to keep going for it too, despite the fact that I've already been getting some backlash for attempting something new. Trying to wrap your head around a profession takes time, research and practice. I'm willing to give learning photography all of that and more. Learning is continuous and there's always ways to improve.
I think it's difficult to try new things when there's already so many other people out there who do things much better. The key thing to remember is that everyone has to start somewhere, and I will happily ask people for advice to help better myself, and I will happily take constructive criticism and even ask for it too. I encourage people to try their hands and something new, the worst thing that happens is you fail, but you have nothing to lose. On the plus side, you could succeed and how great would that be? My honest opinion is if you have negativity towards other people and their success then you don't deserve success of your own. So whatever it is that you're thinking about trying, go do it.
When was the last time you put yourself out of your comfort zone?
These pictures are great! I'm glad you took your own advice and went for it! All you need to do is try because you never know what will happen! Definitely continue applying for more passes!
